Roll 3: Workshop Tri-X 400

roll3shop0114007 roll3shop0114011 roll3shop0114012 roll3shop0114014 roll3shop0114018 I'm so glad last week is over, it was crazy, and stressful. I did however have some time with friends, and some time to shoot.

This is a roll I shot a few weeks ago, more studying of the wood-shop and it's contents.  I really feel that there are so many nooks and crannies to be investigated here.  I shot a roll is color the other day for Roll 4,  I still need to get it developed.  I'm a little nervous about that actually.  Once you are developing your own film it's hard to trust someone else to do it for you.  I just need color! I see in color, these need to be in color!

I'm also hoping to work more with my DSLR, I don't want to feel that my 52 roll goal is taking over my photo life.  I need to be constantly photographing.

Darkroom Adventures: Film Challenge

This year I really want to push myself to make more photographs, even more than last year! I think that 2013 was successful in many ways, but this year I want to put myself out of my comfort zone. So I'm challenging myself to take 52 rolls of film this year. One per week.
Of course I will be summarizing each week with it's ups and downs right here on the blog. Join me if you like! If you aren't into film work with whatever you have! Just go out and take pictures every week. Let me know how it goes.

Darkroom Adventures: Danielson

Happy New Year! I am so excited for this new clean slate that has finally caught up with us. There are so many things that I want to do this year, but for now I'm going to focus on taking photos. These three are from a roll that I developed, I posted other photos from that roll about a month ago.

Film photography and art in general is a MUST this year, I am full of inspiration and I can't wait to start creating.
So many good things are out there waiting, I can just feel it :)

Darkroom Adventures: Scanning!

I finally set up my scanner so that I can properly document my darkroom adventures. Here is the roll of film that I developed earlier this week, I was worried that it wasn't going to come out. I didn't have quite enough fixer and I had to do math to figure out the correct ratio... ANYWAY, they came out and I'm happy. I still need to buy more chemicals in order to develop more. 1311_roll01_001 1311_roll01_003 1311_roll01_002 I'm really happy with the scanned contact sheet. It's not beautiful because the glass I use is full of scratches, but hey, what's a poor girl to do? I printed images 21 and 22, the first few rows are over exposed, but most are workable, not sure if I'm going to print anymore from this roll, what do you think?

I finished another roll yesterday, and I'll buy more chemicals as soon as I get paid on friday! I talk and think about payday way too much :)

Darkroom Adventures: Kodak Retina iif

IMG_2921 IMG_2923 IMG_2920 The photos above were all take with my Kodak Retina iiF, I acquired this camera at an antique store around a year ago, simply because it came with an awesome leather camera bag. I hadn't really considered using the camera until recently, for some reason I thought that it needed a battery to operate. So back in September I finally got to googling the manual and I learned that I needn't a battery at all. I was pretty psyched.

This camera is a rangefinder and I'm not used to focusing those, so it really was a new experience. It really is hard to tell what you are focusing on when you are shooting! As you can tell from the first photo. I had meant to focus on the closer bunch of blooms, but the lens won't focus on things that are such a short distance away. It really is a whole different playing field... not seeing straight through the lens I mean.

The latest darkroom news is that I need more fixer and film developer before I can process more film.  I developed one roll the other day that I will print later this week.

Below is a photo of the camera and film I used, isn't it gorgeous? _DSC0339

Darkroom Adventures: Blooming tree & other prints

I have not been in the darkroom to print since early this month.  I have been so busy with applying to jobs, sleeping, working, and being sick!  We also need another car, which doesn't directly affect my darkroom time, but does indirectly.  My goal for the end of this year is to hang in a show somewhere, but I start to doubt that I will ever get that far.

Here are prints I made this month of the cherry (?) tree amidst the abandoned mill.  Most of these prints came out gray and I could not figure out why.  I am not getting any good highlights, this may just be due to poor exposure.

Here are the "final" prints from my first roll of medium format.

This week I plan on printing shots from a new/old camera.  I used an old Kodak Retina IIF for the first time, I'll share more this week.

Darkroom Adventures

Here's a look at the film I developed this week, a medium format roll that I shot on my Diana F+ this winter.  The photos look so cold and creepy, I love it.  These photos are taken from the contact sheet that I made from the roll, this explains the scratches.  I don't have a film holder for this size film (yet), so I can't yet make prints.  As soon as the one I ordered off ebay from Korea gets here I'll make prints of these.  (here's a link to a photos of the actual negatives, as you can see they came out quite thin, so under exposed)

On another note, I can't believe it's already Friday (insert crying here) this means that I have to go back to work tomorrow, and that makes me sad.  But hey, I do need the money.  Tonight I'm going to a little going away party, then I want to come home and plan the camping trip.  I didn't realize how difficult it would be to find a campsite that I like that also allows dogs!

Darkroom Adventures

This week I did very well in my darkroom.  I got right back to it and started making prints, after a quick trip to Hunt's Photo Video in Providence.  Here are the prints that I made this week.

I love these photos, especially the first and last.  I was using a slow shutter speed on the middle two because of low lighting, and it really kills the focus on them.  And clearly I needed to get some Kodak Photo Flo for my negatives, I have since gotten some.  I hope the next roll comes out clean!

These photos were the last roll of film that I developed in my bathroom, I can't believe it but that was back in March!  Poor Moritz (in first 3 photos) has since been laid to rest.  I'm glad I have these prints to remember him by.  Speaking of memories, it's one of my goals this year to put a photo album together of all of my favorite darkroom/digital prints from the year.

The plan is to develop another roll of film tomorrow before I go to work.  That way I can work on them this week and share more next friday! Wish me luck!

Here are my favorite images so far since setting up my darkroom.  I have found however that as I continue to work in there and practice the more I am enjoying the end result.  And the final result has been coming easier as well.

this last one is what I worked on today, as well as another print of Elden.  All I take pictures of are dogs.  They are just so interesting to me.  But I am sure that they are not to everyone else.  Everyone is most interested in their own dog I think.
